How to collect customer reviews on Shopify UK without apps
Collect customer reviews on Shopify UK without a review app: lawful email requests, honest incentives and how to display reviews you gather yourself.
What to take away
- You can run a review programme on a Shopify UK store without a review app: order follow-up emails, a short form, manual publishing.
- UK GDPR applies to the buyer email you use and the words you publish, so set a lawful basis and update your privacy notice.
- Rewards are allowed when they are modest, offered to every buyer and clearly disclosed.
- Decide who sends the requests and who publishes the replies before the first one goes out.
Why some UK stores collect reviews without an app
Shopify stores in the UK often start with a handful of orders a week. Adding another monthly subscription before the review volume justifies it is hard to defend to an owner watching cash. Running the first version by hand also keeps buyer data inside tools you already control, such as your email platform and a spreadsheet.
The trade-off is time. Someone has to write the email, check the form and paste reviews onto the store. That is workable at 20 orders a week and painful at 2,000, so treat the manual method as a starting position. When volume grows, compare paid options in our guide to best review software for small UK shops.
A four-step routine you can run this week
- Add a line to your order or dispatch email telling buyers they may be invited to review their purchase, and point them to your privacy notice.
- Send one follow-up from a monitored address once the courier shows the parcel as delivered, usually 7 to 14 days after dispatch.
- Link to a short form that asks for a rating, a few sentences, and permission to publish a first name and town.
- Publish each review, then reply to any that describes a problem, even when the fix is a refund.
Keep to one request per order, and at most one reminder. A £9 phone case does not deserve three emails in a fortnight. Write in your own voice: the buyer has just opened your packaging, not joined a mailing list.

A hand-built page is not as tidy as an app widget. It will not sort by rating or filter by product, and the admin grows with every order. Treat it as a way to prove the process works, then move to software when the weekly admin time costs more than the subscription.

Keeping requests lawful under UK GDPR
A buyer's email address is personal data. The ICO's guide to the UK GDPR sets out the lawful bases, and legitimate interests usually fits a request tied to a purchase the buyer has already made. Your privacy notice should say that you may invite a review and publish it.
Publishing is a second decision. A first name, town and product photo can identify someone, so ask before you use them. The bigger trap is selection: asking only happy customers while quietly filtering the rest. Our explainer on review gating rules in the UK covers where that crosses the line.
Rewards, honesty and the regulator
Discount codes work as a thank you, but the advertising code section on misleading advertising requires an incentivised review to be identifiable as such. Never make a positive review the price of the reward.
The Competition and Markets Authority treats fake, hidden or misleading reviews as an unfair commercial practice, and its published guidance and casework show what it expects. Dated records of every request and reply are the simplest defence if a complaint arrives.
Common questions
Do I need written consent to publish a review?
You need a lawful basis and a clear expectation, not a signature. Ask in the form whether you may publish a first name and town, and keep that answer with the review.
Can I ask only happy customers to leave a review?
Choosing recipients by how satisfied you think they are risks a misleading impression, and that is the practice regulators target. Send the same request to every buyer and let the results stand.
What should I do with a review I cannot verify?
Ask for an order number before you publish. If you cannot match it to an order, leave it unpublished and note the reason in your records.
